Understanding through editing
A generated chart is a starting point. What can you do with it next?
People were asking for a different chart, a new label, another color. Each small refinement could become another exchange with the model. Meanwhile, they needed to check something more basic: had their data been read correctly?
My work on Gemini covered how people could interact with generated graphs and code. Three decisions in the graph experience still interest me: let people inspect the source, make small edits directly, and offer a useful set of choices.
Put the next move within reach
We developed tap-and-click editing around the changes people asked for most: chart type, labels, and colors. They could refine the result where they were already working.

Fewer choices, with a reason
In the original research account, people faced chart types, color families, and sometimes more than twenty colors. We were asking them to make design decisions before helping them understand the choices.
The editing flow offered a smaller set of chart recommendations relative to the data. Browsing the parsed data and trying another chart could become part of understanding the answer.
A useful release within moving limits
The models in consideration supported different experiences. I developed good, better, and best versions so the design could meet the capabilities available for release.

That is the idea I want to carry forward: understanding through editing. The result should give someone something to inspect, question, and change.
