Alas, data on bluefin tuna, particularly the Atlantic species, are not as easily available and according to some experts the few data available are not very accurate." -John Sibert In this "pilot episode" of "Sculpting Fish into Everyday Data" we make fish cakes, into healthy data portions, that are directly related to the biomass of the Atlantic Blue Fin Tuna. Sculpting Fish Into Everyday Data sheds light on the predicament of the delicious and endangered bluefin tuna.It is a story of recent economic conditions codifying themselves into ancient culinary and cultural tradition, of the ecological and political realities brought on by the tragedy of the commons in an age of both increasing efficiency and growing scarcity, and of a quickening death march brought on by an economic feedback loop where demand outpacing supply provides an incentive to create ever greater scarcity. In this project, we present the physical shape of the bluefin tuna emaciated by its own dwindling population and presented in its most common setting on a Japanese sushi board.
